Congratulations for encouraging your loved one to take the steps neccessary to treat their substance abuse and for choosing The Watershed Addiction Treatment Programs. The Watershed fully recognizes that addictive behavior affects the entire family. That is why addiction to alcohol and drugs is understood not only to be the individual sufferings disease, but a family disease as well. It could not be overstated that families suffer too. The Watershed staff is here to assist you through this difficult time. We have been helping patients and family members understand the recovery process and how it may impact your relationship dynamics while your loved one is in treatment and as their recovery proceeds post treatment. The staff at The Watershed has the expertise and the passion to motivate your loved ones to want recovery. We motivate our patients by stabilizing their medical condition and by providing them tools to improve their emotional intelligence so that they can deal with life stressors free of dependence on substance. This is of course, a process that takes time. Do not forget, your loved ones did not develop an addiction overnight. They may have hidden that from you, however, addiction is a chronic and progressive disease. Recovery in turn does not happen overnight either. We do need your support and we invite you to be an integral part of your loved ones treatment team. We will in turn support you by providing you the tools to take care of your emotions to cope with this stressful time in your life. At the Watershed we believe that recovery is a reality and that addicts do learn how to take control over their addiction and experience life to the fullest.
Let me briefly explain what to expect while your loved one is in treatment:
The Watershed is accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed by the Department of Children and Family services. We provide comprehensive services for those afflicted with the disease of addiction who might also be dually-diagnosed (depression, anxiety, bipolar-disorders, eating disorders, sex-addiction, childhood traumas, anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders among others). Our staff consists of Paramedics, nurses, addiction psychiatrists, family and internal medicine physicians, mental health counselors, psychologists, social-workers, nutritionists and paraprofessionals. We follow an evidence based treatment model and we are compassionate and passionate about the work that we do. We teach our patients about the 12 steps philosophy among other support groups that best suit you and your loved ones cultural values system. Our levels of care include: Detoxification, inpatient rehabilitation, partial-hospitalization and intensive outpatient. We provide individual, group-psychotherapy and psycho educational groups, medical and psychiatric follow up.
As your loved one enters treatment they are placed in the detox level of care if their attending physician deems it to be medically neccessary. Our staff uses the ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) placement criteria to determine your loved ones treatment modality. During the detoxification phase your loved one might experience a variety of emotions as their body/brain is trying to adjust without the use of their substance of choice. However, our medical, nursing and clinical staff will be there to help them get proper detoxification and medical stabilization as well as to provide them and you emotional support. It is not uncommon that you may get a call from your loved one asking to return home and promising that they will never use again. Individuals with a substance disorder are ambivalent about getting better, in other words, giving up their drug of choice. They are afraid and may not like their feelings or do not know how to deal with the chaotic emotions of the early stages of their recovery process. That is the reason that a supportive and structured environment like The Watershed can assist yout loved one to stay focused and help them to develop the neccessary coping mechanism to deal with their triggers, to identifying issues contributing to their vicious addictive/relapse cycle so that they can embark in their recovery journey with clarity of mind. This way they will be better equipped to change their addictive behaviors and continue their journey of recovery in a less restrictive level of care. We teach them to be self sufficient by developing self-efficacy skills. Again, we will be providing the same support to you and guiding you through your loved ones recovery process.
The initial detox/assessment treatment phase may last 7 days or more. The staff will be contacting you within 24 hours of your loved ones admission to our facility. It is important that you be honest with us and communicate some of the issues that you and your loved one have as a result of their addictive behaviors. You will participate in family therapy sessions either face to face or by phone if you are in adifferent geographical area, visit our website at: www.thewatershed.com to learn about our family program. We need you to contact us at 1-866-891-5213 in the event that your loved one is asking you to take them from treatment. Please, understand that eventually they will get stabilized and be ready to deal with their issues and enjoy the miracles of life free of addiction.
The next phase of treatment following detoxification is called inpatient rehabilitation. During this phase the patient might still be dealing with post-acute withdrawal symptoms but should start to get more engaged in their prescribed treatment modalities. This phase may last two to three weeks. Although your loved one may be making progress it has not even been one month since they entered treatment. The National Institute of Drug and Alcohol Abuse: http://www.nida.nih.gov/ states that the longer one stays in treatment the higher their chances are of changing addictive behaviors and maintaining abstinence. That is why we encourage your loved one to attend our Partial Hospitalization Level of Care. During this phase your loved one will be living in a structured environment that will allow them to practice skills and the coping mechanism that they have been assimilating during their inpatient treatment phase. At the same time, we continue to help you to also change your behaviors so that you are ina position to establish healthy relationship boundaries when your loved one is ready to return home. You and your loved one might feel that this is a long process. You want to be together to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and other enjoyable times in your life. Be patient and persistent so that the changes you are making can last a lifetime. It may be helpful to write down some of the crises that you were living through as your loved one was breaking their promises to stay sober and not being there for you and your family. You and him/her can make it! This is a Watershed moment in your lives.
In the next level of care, which is called Intensive Outpatient, your loved one might be leading a productive life by either working or going to school. They might be free of their drug of choice for 40 plus days. Family home visits are now a reality and you can have the opportunity to also practice the coping skills taught to you by the treatment team. By now you have also learned what it means to have healthy relationship boundaries and have been taking better care of yourself physically and emotionally. As your loved ones are ready to embrace a long journey of recovery the Watershed team will continue to provide the support that is needed to help you and your loved ones on this new phase back to your home environment. We will provide you and your loved one a comprehensive after care plan to be followed post discharge from The Watershed. Also, the staff at The watershed Alumni Program is available to you and your loved one 24 hours a day / 7 days per week. Please, visit our alumni website at: http://www.watershedalumni.com or the alumni section of: http://www.thewatershed.com to learn about the services that we offer following your loved ones discharge from our facility.
We look forward to speaking to you and meeting with you in the very near future. We are committed to excellence and wish you and your loved ones a successful journey as you are embracing a new stage in your life.
